Meet the Team – Matthew Harman

The last of the Harmans partners to feature in our Meet the Team series is Matthew Harman.

First job you ever had? Farmer, I came straight from Cambridge University with my Masters in Geography and straight back into the family business.

What led you to work in this field? Real sliding doors moment involving my brother and my first employer.

Best piece of advice anyone has ever given you? The only sensible thing my ex father-in-law ever said – time spent in reconnaissance is seldom wasted.

What do you feel is the biggest strength of our company right now? Niche practice concentrating on good work in a team with no weak links.

What’s the best thing about being a costs lawyer? Interesting and varied files means that the work is rarely dull.

What’s the worst thing about being a costs lawyer? The pursuit of CPD points.

What would you be if you weren’t a costs lawyer? Retired, on the golf course.

How do you explain what you do for a living to family and friends? I don’t normally try!

Work related achievement that you’re proud of? The ongoing success and succession of Harmans.

Biggest work pet peeve? Imposed deadlines that really are not necessary.

What activities do you enjoy outside of work? Sport (see below), travel.

What are you currently binge watching? Rewatching Fargo – best series ever imho.

If you could have dinner with one famous person who would it be? Human rights lawyer Clive Stafford Smith.

Favourite sport to watch? What about to play? Watch rugby (Saracens season ticket holder of 25+ years), football – Chesham United, where I was once the stadium announcer. Cricket – I umpire most weekends. I also play golf (badly).
