Meet the Team – Mathew Knight

This week it’s Mathew Knight under the spotlight.

First job you ever had? This one. I left university with a degree in Maths but was undecided on what I wanted to do next; the family business was costs, the Maths side of costs appealed to me so I decided to give it a go and became a Costs Lawyer.

What led you to work in this field? My family. My father (Jim Knight) and my uncle (Gary Knight) were Partners in a firm of costs lawyers at the time I left university. I investigated other careers but kept coming back to costs and ended up following in the family footsteps when I joined the firm in 1997. My uncle trained me and more than 25 years later we are still working together, now at Harmans!

Best piece of advice anyone has ever given you? Always look on the bright side of life.

What do you feel is the biggest strength of our company right now? The overall experience of the Partners and employees in the firm at this time.

What’s your most used productivity hack? CostsMaster.

What would you be if you weren’t a costs lawyer? An architect so that I could design my own house to live in.

Best thing about working at Harmans? The office environment but with the flexibility to work from home.

How do you explain what you do for a living to family and friends? I work for Solicitors in order to calculate their costs for conducting a claim which they won on behalf of their client and then seeking recovery of the costs from the losing party.

Work related achievement that you’re proud of? Qualifying as a Costs Lawyer.

Biggest work pet peeve? Having to get up early in the morning to get to work. I am not a morning person!

If you could change one thing about your job what would it be? Meeting 21 day deadlines.

What activities do you enjoy outside of work? Mountain biking, walking and gaming.

What are you currently binge watching? Happy Valley.

Do you have any pets? Can we see a photo? PJ the cat and Pebbles the gecko.

If you could have dinner with one famous person who would it be? Bruce Springsteen.

Favourite sport to watch? What about to play? Football for both, although getting a bit too old to play these days!
